“Night, Night, SweAt Dream!”에서 나는 디지털 이미지 및 렌티큘러 작업을 통해 나 자신이 늘 고통스럽게 체험하는 악몽들을 재현해 냅니다. 제목인 Night, Night, SweAt Dream!은 좋은 꿈을 꾸라는 가벼운 인사인 Night, Night, Sweet Dream!에서 착안한 것으로서, sweet을 sweat으로 바꾸어 냄으로써 나의 꿈들이 얼마나 진땀나는 고통과 공포, 불안들을 보여주는지를 암시하고 있습니다.

이러한 나의 나쁜 꿈들은 가부장제 내부에서 억압되고, 강요당하고, 훈육되는 여성들의 고통을 작가 자신의 체험으로부터 표현된 것이라 할 수 있습니다. 이번 프로젝트를 통해 소개될 일련의 작품들에서, 나는 억압된 언어를 국수로 치환시키거나, 끊임없이 입안의 것들을 뱉어내기만 하는 일종의 히스테리적 실어증 혹은 거식증을 앓고 있다는 것을 보여주고, 미치광이처럼 머리를 긁어도 긁어도 해소되지 않는 고통스러운 가려움, 물속에서 허우적거리며 결국은 빠져 나오지 못하는 남자를 내려다보며 쾌감을 느끼는 ‘그녀’를 보여주기도 합니다. 또한 고통스럽게 허리를 기계적으로 반복해 굽었다 펴며 “무엇을 도와드릴까요”를? 중얼거려야 하는 자신을 재현합니다. ‘그녀’에 대한 비밀스런 통제와, 불안과, 욕망들은 그렇게 작품 속에서 드러나게 됩니다.? 그러나 현실의 그녀는 실어증이나 거식증의 증상을 보이지도 않고, 늘 단정한 머리를 하고 있으며, 남자들을 위기에 빠뜨리지도 않는, 남에게 도움을 주는 것이 당연한 것처럼 행동하는 그런 평범한 ‘여성’이라는 이름을 묵묵히 수행할 뿐입니다. 작품 ‘인사하는 여자_무엇을 도와드릴까요’는 인포메이션 데스크의 도우미처럼, ‘그녀’에게 늘 요구되는 도움에의 강요가, 가부장제에서 여성들에게 가해지는 조력자, 도우미로서의 성역할, 혹은 그 이상의 의무로 ‘그녀’의 어깨를 찍어 누르고 있다는 것을 보여줍니다.

마치 기계장치의 반복성처럼 공손함이라는 미덕을 위해 허리를 움직여야만 하는 ‘그녀’의 상태는 사실은 현실속 그녀의 캐릭터 안에 숨겨진 채 위로 받지 못하는 그 고통에 관한 것으로 보입니다. 그러한 고통은 늘 존재하는 불안, 그리고 그 고통을 입 밖으로 내뱉고 싶지만 번번히 실패하고마는 ‘그녀’의 억압된 욕망들은 입으로부터 쏟아져 나오는 국수를 통해 드러납니다. 작품 ‘국수를 뱉는 여자’에서 그녀에게 언어란 억압되고, 빼앗긴 것입니다. 그녀의 언어는 ‘먹어 치워야 할’ 어떤 것 들을, ‘말해야 하는’ 입을 통해 쏟아져 내리는 국수가락으로 대치할 뿐입니다. 해소되지 않는 그 고통은 다시 한번 다른 작품 ‘머리 긁는 여자’에서 극단적으로 그 모습을 드러냅니다. 여자는 끊임없이 머리를 긁지만, 그 가려움의 고통은 이 가부장의 공간에서는 영원히 해소되지 않을 것이라는 ‘그녀’의 공포를 암시하는 것입니다.



그래서 빠져 나오지 못하고 물에서 계속해서 허우적대는 남자를 보여주는 작품 ‘허우적 대는 남자’는 또 다른 방식의 그녀의 욕망의 표현, 혹은 복수극으로 재현됩니다. 가부장과 남근의 권력으로 빈틈없이 메워진 가족의 역사(family history/family secret), 사회의 구조, 혹은 그 내부에서 훈육된 그녀의 고통들은 그들을 벌하라고, 그녀와 똑같은 고통을 그에게 가하라고 말하고 있습니다.

그러나 이러한 고통과, 불안, 공포, 그리고 그녀의 욕망은 늘 그녀의 꿈속에서만? 반복될 뿐입니다. 현실은 그녀의 입을 막고, 그녀에게서 상냥한 미소만을 요구하고, 그녀의 욕망을 벌하고 거세합니다. 현실은 그녀에게 잘자라고 말하지만(“Night, Night, Sweet Dream!”), 그녀에게 그것은 늘 악몽을 꾸라고 말하는 것처럼 들릴 뿐입니다. (“Night, Night, SweAt Dream!”)

“Night, Night, SweAt Dream!”

I have reproduced some of my painful by using digital images or lenticular work. The title of my exhibition is Night, Night, SweAt Dream! which comes from “Night, Night, Sweet Dream” which is actually based on sweet dreams. I would like to present how nightmares make me frightened, give me pain and cause me to break into a cold sweat.

From my experience, nightmares represent the pain of women who are oppressed, forced and educated in Korean customs(patriarchal society). Customs which focus mainly on man. A series of my works which was introduced in another exhibition was Woman Vomiting Noodles. This represented the oppressed language of the woman. She is throwing everything up continually. She has a kind of hysterical Aphasia or Anorexia. In this picture this girl who cannot stop scratching her head, agonizes over a constant itch. In the other piece of work, a man has a constant struggle in the sea. He cannot drown. He cannot escape. However, in this case, I don't try to related, I just enjoy the feeling of equality I get enjoy the few moments when the score is even. It shows pain of mine that I must share with you. May I help you represents my continuous service to others. My head always bowing in servanthood. The secret control, restlessness and craving of mine are showed in my works. But in the real world, I am just a woman even though I help other men naturally. I am pretend to be a decent girl in reality and I am always doing the duty of a woman in a man's world.

One of my works May I help you shows the forced duty of women in Korea. In this world, women are regarded as a helper for men. Take receptionists. They are forced into helping and they must bow over and over for politeness. It is mechanical. I always have a hurt which is never comforted in the depths of my mind. I want to share my pain and eternal uneasiness but I fail each time.
The overflowing noodles expresses the oppressed desire to speak. My words are oppressed. The man’s language dominates this world, and I cannot overcome it. The Woman Scratching Hair, pain is showed again. Although I scratch my head continually, I feel fear that the itch will never be solved. It gives a hint that I cannot escape from the pain in this world.

Lastly my work Man Drowning is created for revenge. It's expresses my desire for revenge. This world is based on the authority of men. Therefore, I shout that we have to punish them and give them the same pain. However the pain, uneasiness, panic and desire of mine are just repeated in my dreams. In reality, I am forced smile to others, keep my worlds to myself, and suffocate my desire. The real world says to me "Night, Night, Sweet Dream”, but I only hear a nightmare "Night, Night, SweAt Dream!".
