The more, The Better?
I often receive some spam mails including anti-aging items, such as "Lose those love handles", Dont' need to work out anymore", "feel 20 yrs younger", "Reverse the effects of aging", "Happy or not", "Losing weight has never been so easy!". Why these kinds of advertisements manipulate people to undergo cosmetic surgery or look younger? In Korea, children know their division of labor by social norm although nobody teaches gender roles to children directly. Among these patriarchal traditions, advertisements and television shows play a negative role in obtaining gender problems such as learning the gender division of labor, women as secondary beings in the family and not to mention daughters are to be protected. Even they convince women to be a beautiful woman as well induce women to apply anti-aging products that slogan are "No more aged wrinkles", "Skin Revolution", "Eye zone protection", and not to mention "anti-ageing care". However who can blame women, really? Who would not want to look younger, thinner, and prettier?
Some might think that the contemporary society bears little resemblance with the past and therefore the background knowledge of the past hardly has much relevance in understanding the present realities. Indeed, at least the exterior of the society today certainly looks very different from say one hundred or even 40 years ago, in terms of economics, culture and politics. However, the more we examine the interior of social organizations and people, we find more of the continuation of the values which have upheld the tradition.
Gender socialization is the process through which an individual male or female learns what is regarded as appropriate to his or her gender. Children learn from outside classrooms as much as inside. The socializing agents vary; parents, family members, peer group, schools, media, and other social organizations. In order to understand how this gender socialization process occurs. |
